Air Quality in Southwestern Ontario
Clean Air Partnership (CAP) provides secretariat services to the Ad-Hoc Southwestern Ontario Clean Air Council (SWO-CAC). CAP convened the inaugural meeting of the Southwestern Ontario Clean Air Council (SWO-CAC) that took place in London, Ontario on March 11th, 2009.
This meeting featured the latest scientific findings on regional air quality conditions in Southwestern Ontario presented by Dan Roumbanis, Senior Engineer from Environment Canada . Jamie Skimming, Air Quality Manager, City of London presented some of London air quality work. Barry Jessiman, Air Quality Assessment Section at Health Canada presented an analysis of an air emission in southwestern Ontario and health and economic impacts of air pollution. Ralph Torrie spoke about the impact of Climate Change on municipalities from both a scientific and economic aspect. The Clean Air Partnership gave a presentation on their work and the work of the GTA-Clean Air Council as did Louise Aubin, Region of Peel presented from a members point of view. The meeting was well attended with a number of SWO municipalities and health units represented. The participants supported the need to establish a Southwestern Ontario Clean Air Council was supported. Proceedings from the March 11th SWO-CAC meeting will be available by the end of March 2009.
Southwestern Ontario Clean Air Council
The first Southwestern Ontario Clean Air Summit will be held on May 21, 2009 in Woodstock Ontario. The Summit is an opportunity for municipalities to come together and develop a workplan and declaration that will outline future activities to collaborate on. The Summit will include a Best Practices session highlighting clean air and climate change projects SWO municipalities and currently working on.. Representatives of Southeast Michigan (SEMCOG) the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments have a strong interest in these issues and will be invited to share what they are doing and discuss possible joint actions on transboundary issues.
