No Escape for Drivers Who Idle Their Vehicles

TORONTO – Enforcement officers in Toronto issued 17 tickets and 84 warnings today, the second last day of Idle-Free Week in the GTA.

So far this week, they have issued 72 tickets, 279 warnings and 3 summonses. The 3 drivers who received the summonses resisted officers by either verbally abusing them or driving away. They will have to appear in court and could receive fines of up to $5000.

“The best thing you can do is avoid idling,” said Eva Ligeti, Executive Director of the Clean Air Partnership. “When you’re parking for more than 10 seconds, turn off your engine. Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine.” .

Burlington enforcement officers have approached more than 500 drivers this week and encouraged them to make a commitment to reduce their idling time.
