Adapting to Climate Change in Ontario: Towards the Design and Implementation of a Strategy and Action Plan

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has released a report titled Adapting to Climate Change in Ontario: Towards the Design and Implementation of a Strategy and Action Plan, authored by Ontario’s Expert Panel on Climate Change Adaptation. The report lists a broad range of recommendations to help Ontario understand climate change impacts, reduce risks and take advantage of beneficial opportunities resulting from climate change.

Extreme Heat Decision Support System

April 24, 2009

This project, with support from Natural Resources Canada’s GeoConnections, will see the creation of a web based spatial decision support system to examine heat islands in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Planners and public health staff will employ this tool to aid decision making, including the identification of vulnerable populations located in hotspots, the allocation of public health nurses during extreme heat events and the locations of cooling centers. The thermal layers used in this GIS system are based on LANDSAT 7 satellite imagery.

This image is a single day thermal image taken from a Landsat 7 satellite.

This image is the difference in thermal signature across the GTHA between 1990 and 2008.
